ASLI - 06 th SEPT 2008

The first ever get-together of interpreters for the deaf by ASLI will be held from 4pm to 7pm on Saturday 26th July 2008 at Indian Social Institute (ISI) Lodhi Industrial Area, behind Sai Baba Mandir, refreshments will be served. The event to take place in Delhi will be a landmark in the history of India. The interpreting profession has not been given its proper status and it is ASLI’s aim to put the profession in the centre stage of all developmental work relating to the deaf community. Partnered by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) in their venture the ASLI aims to be the pioneer in creating professional standards as well as training amateur interpreters across the country says President, Arun C. Rao who is also Founding President of the NAD.

ASLI is a newly formed organization to represent the Interpreters for the deaf in India. The deaf community of India has not had a formal interpreting organization until now. The concept of sign language interpreting as a professional service for deaf persons has yet to take hold in India. The apex organizations for the deaf are already campaigning for this to take place.

There is a lot that ASLI will be doing to support and enable the local organization of the deaf. You have already been working in interpreting albeit with or without formal training for some time now. All persons who have been serving the deaf community selflessly for years by providing interpreting services will now have ASLI to support them in their endeavors by building awareness of the need for interpreters and advocating the need for linguistic access for deaf persons.

ASLI intends to work closely with apex organizations of the deaf to create a post of interpreter in the govt. this will give our profession the much needed stature. There is a great need for interpreters in the country and the activities of deaf organisations everywhere are stagnating because of the lack of interpreting services. Deaf sign users in the community are unable to access even basic services. ASLI will endeavor to increase awareness of the general population and the govt. , provide specialized training, a formal and non-formal certification system and a greater visibility for interpreters at a national level.

Deaf and Dumb protest against 'occupation' of their office-May 7, 2005

Deaf and dumb protest against 'occupation' of their office
From: Kashmir Live, India - May 7, 2005
Express News Service
Jammu, May 6: KARAN Kumar Verma, a deaf and dumb, ekes out his living from the click of a camera. The annexe of his house makes up for a studio where from he receives orders to get pictures of marriage parties prepared. He was on a silent protest today along with many other deaf and dumb. They did'nt raise any slogans but the police were on the spot to prevent anything untoward from happening.
Kumar and his other colleagues were protesting over the alleged 'occupation' of their association office. ''The association office where from we were operating, has been occupied. We are on the road,'' said Roshan Bhan, honorary secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir Association of the Deaf.
The association has been working for the rehabilitation of the deaf by offering them vocational training. ''Some 500 deafs are associated with us. We work for their welfare,'' Bhan said.
Many of the deafs associated with the association today poured on the streets seeking that their office be restored to them. They blocked the road at Jain Bazar causing disruption to traffic. Their leaders were responding to them to remain united. ''The association was established in 1975 by Ram Lal Arora who was himself a deaf and dumb. He was elected as the founding president of the association in the same year. He opened the head office in his own house here,'' added Bhan.
However, joint secretary of the Rashtriya Sewika Samiti (RSS) Prem Lata Gupta begs to differ. ''We have been kept here by the trust itself. The orphans of militancy are being rehabilitated here and they are being nurtured with the spirit of patriotism,'' she said.
The association of the deaf has been contending that some among the deaf and dumb were harassed when they opened the office room and they were given a severe thrashing and thrown forcibly out of the building.
